Worcestershire Liberal Democrats prioritise fixing the drains and making roads safer from flooding
Worcestershire Liberal Democrats are proposing that the county council fix the collapsing drains of the county to ensure residents are not at risk of flooding or becoming stranded.
The Department for Transport has provided several million pounds of funding for the next four years to ensure the council can undertake a series of maintenance projects. The Liberal Democrats are proposing a £1 million scheme in 2026/27 to create a drainage stability fund. This will be at no cost to council taxpayers.
Where roads are routinely affected by local flooding, or the drains are collapsing and making the roads unusable, the fund can be used to fix the problem and make the road safer for longer.
Pershore Councillor Dan Boatright-Greene says: “It is time the council prioritised the impact collapsing drains are having on our roads. Too many roads are getting flooded by a lack of investment in our drainage system. A perfect example is here in Pinvin on Owletts Lane. For years, the county council has known that drains have collapsed in the area, but the focus has always been on short-term solutions, leaving the road flooded for long periods as drains back up. It is time to address this issue properly.”
“Too many residents face the worries of routine flooding. We are determined to fix the drains and ensure everyone can get about when they need to.
We hope fellow councillors support our proposal so we can get our drains doing their job, getting water off the roads and away from buildings.”
